Coreopsis verticillata 'Zagreb' (Zagreb Coreopsis) (4-in.)

Similar to the newer selection ‘Tweety’ (also in this sale), ‘Zagreb’ is a beloved Threadleaf Tickseed that gardeners love for its cheerful yellow flowers, easy care/zero maintenance once established, long life, and flexibility to grow in a variety of soils with little water as long as it is planted in full sun. The large, daisy-like lemon-yellow flowers with a golden center appear on pure green slender foliage, and bloom continuously from early summer into mid-fall, supporting pollinators for many months.

The ‘Zagreb’ cultivar grows taller and wider (about 1 to 2 ft. tall and wide) than the ‘Tweety’ cultivar, and sprawls a little more. As is true for all coreopsis, to promote rebloom, deadhead regularly and consider trimming with hedge shears to remove the top quarter to third after blooming. Leaving the seed on in the fall will provide winter food for birds. This plant thrives on neglect, is drought tolerant once established, and deer resistant.

The dainty, finely-cut foliage offers a contrast to most other sun-loving waterwise perennials, and thus it is particularly delightful when paired with Echinacea or Gaura varieties — the yellow hues of the Coreopsis and pinkish hues of the Gaura or Coneflower are lovely together, the bloom times are aligned, and their different foliage and forms create a striking combination in the landscape or a bigger container.
