You have likely encountered Oak Fern on hiking adventures in the Olympics, and admired its delicate foliage and how beautifully it complements native perennials. This native fern is a specialty plant sought by those with fern collections or native plant lovers with summertime moist soils in shady spots.

A compact fern, it won’t grow much taller than about 10 inches in height and it spreads laterally by rhizome.

As with most ferns, this will need a shady location; but it also requires soils that are rich in organic matter and have a source of moisture throughout the summer. Alternatively, it would be a gorgeous addition to a container on a shady porch or patio where it’s receiving summer irrigation.

It is especially lovely when planted with shade-loving native perennials (many of which we offer in our spring sale) and with other delicate ferns, such as Deer Fern, Autumn Fern, and Lady Fern (including Athyrium cultivars).
