Everything about ‘Midnight Marvel’ hardy hibiscus demands that it be a featured plant in the landscape. Its glossy black-red buds open to reveal huge deep scarlet-red flowers, with many ongoing blooms from mid-summer and into fall. Its dissected maple-like leaves — though deciduous — are thick and leathery, a striking deep-wine purple all summer, and then turn a stunning coppery-red in fall.

Unlike tropical annual hibiscus, hardy hibiscus is a semi-woody perennial hardy to Zone 4 (-20 to -30 degrees F), and beloved for its beauty as well as its use in teas, for dyes, or to support nearby wildlife.

Hardy hibiscus plants require full sun (4-6 hours direct light), soils rich in organic matter, and will likely need more water to establish, including ongoing drinks during the hot parts of summer; some sources claim it is drought tolerant, but in our region, some occasional summer water will ensure these continue thriving in your landscape. Place the plant so that the sun hits it directly, as the flowers will turn to face the light.

‘Midnight Marvel’ grows to about 4+ ft. high and wide, although it is one of the latest perennials to emerge in late spring; have no fear, it will re-emerge with fresh shoots and its vigorous growth will quickly make up for its delayed entry, with a gorgeous display until killing frosts. For best results, mulch it heavily before winter, and cut back the old dead-looking growth in early spring prior to the new stems emerging.
