Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon-grape)

from $8.00

This is our native Tall Oregon-Grape, renowned for its shiny evergreen foliage, sweet-smelling bright yellow flowers and blue fruits loved by birds and pollinators. It typically grows around 6-8 ft. tall, but long-lived plants can grow over 10-15 ft. over time if not trimmed! It thrives in a variety of soil types and moisture conditions. Prefers full sun to part shade.

While some gardeners report success cutting selected stems heavily back to just a few inches above the ground to retain bushy, shorter growth, we recommend that if you seek a shorter Oregon-grape for full sun, try the "Compacta" form of this species (also in this sale), which is consistently short and bushy. Read about why we love our 4 Mahonia offerings on our blog!

[Note: “Restoration Grade,” if available, are bargain picks but still great plants: They may have a funky form, be a bit scraggly, or kind of skimpy, but they will perk up once out of their pots and in your sunny landscape. Oregon-grapes struggle to thrive in nursery conditions/contained in pots.]
