Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Cloud' (Red Cloud Maidengrass) (1 gal)

$12.75

Maidengrass is a tried and tested genus of clumping (vs. spreading) ornamental grasses, and the “thin-bladed” varieties have proven themselves very drought tolerant! ‘Red Cloud’ is a cultivar that offers both a convenient mid-height stature and the drought-tolerance usually found only with the smaller cultivars. In addition, the late-summer/fall color will knock your socks off, bringing a powerful display of large wands of fiery rosy-reds during a time when the landscape’s colors are starting to wane.

Moving into fall, the flower color transitions to fluffy white plumes of sterile seedheads that support winter wildlife, add interest to the winter landscape as they capture the light, and are lovely in flower bouquets. The fall color of the foliage is also attractive, becoming golden and retaining that color well into early winter. While birds and beneficial insects appreciate this plant, deer are typically not interested.

‘Red Cloud’ typically grows ~40 to 60 inches high and ~30 to 40 inches wide, is tolerant of most soils, as long as there is decent drainage, and thrives in full sun to light/partial shade. It’s terrific mixed with other sun-loving native and water-wise perennials and ornamental grasses to create a naturalistic aesthetic.

As with many clumping ornamental grasses, Miscanthus requires attention in late winter (Feb-March) to cut back the dead flower stocks and foliage from the previous year before the new growth emerges, allowing the new shoots to shine!
