Rudbeckia fulgida (Black-eyed Susan) (1 gal)

Rudbeckias are a terrific addition to any sunny landscape, providing pollinator support from midsummer through early fall with their cheerful bright yellow flowers and contrasting dark brown center.

Rudbeckia are drought tolerant once established, but perform better with a bit more water during their establishment period, which also may take a few years (but don’t overwater). They are a mid-sized perennial, growing ~18-24 in. high x 24-30 in. wide over time, making them perfect for mixing with many other drought-tolerant plants in a cutting garden or cottage garden — or just lining a pathway or patio.

Because they bloom late, pair them with early or season-long bloomers such as Columbine, Gaura, Liatris, Daylily, Yarrow, Allium, and more. To complement their bloom, consider Echinacea, Amsonia (fall foliage), Sidalcea, and ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus or Pennisetum.

If you have clay soils, pair Rudbeckia with Liatris and Hemerocallis in a sunny spot — all three are clay tolerant!
