Vaccinium ovatum (Evergreen Huckleberry)

from $12.00

A winning native royal addition to your garden! Our native Evergreen Huckleberry is much-prized for its landscape and wildlife value: its shiny evergreen leaves put on a new flush of bronze-hued growth in early spring that lights up the woodland garden! Its bell-shaped flowers are sought by pollinators and many birds, and its sweet, blue-black fruits in late summer provide delightful forage for all!

In full shade, this huckleberry will grow up to 15 ft. tall, but is more typically seen less than 5-6 ft. tall and wide — achieving these sizes over a long time.

Adaptable to shade or part sun, it does best with humus-rich soils and protection from mid-day light. Attractive in a woodland garden mixed with other native understory shrubs and ferns, as well as water-wise cultivars such as azaleas, weigelas, and hellebores. Add in our abundant palette of native shade-loving perennials, and your shade garden will be a gorgeous wildlife-friendly haven!

NOTE: We offer a few different options for this species, those propagated or salvaged from local genetics and grown by us for many years, and others cultivated by trusted commercial nurseries with pollinator-safe practices.
