Calycanthus occidentalis (Western Spicebush)

$0.00

This is a multi-stem, thicket-forming, large deciduous shrub (3-12 ft. tall and wide) native to California. All parts of the plant have attractive fragrance: the blooms, the shiny leaves, and the bark.

The bright red flowers are 1-2 in. wide, resemble a magnolia blossom, and bloom from late spring to early fall in full sun to part shade. In the wild it grows in moist environments on a wide variety of soils; in the garden it will tolerate less moisture, sand or clay soils and seasonal flooding.

Plants attract butterflies, birds and moths, and are deer resistant.
