Cedrus deodara (Deodar Cedar)
Deodar Cedar is a long-lived (up to 1,000 years) evergreen conifer tree with a pyramidal shape and striking gracefully drooping branches. It’s typically used as a specimen tree, as it grows 30-60+ ft. tall and ~20+ ft. wide in our region, eventually providing a lot of shade for understory plants or outdoor entertaining space.
Once planted, they can grow 1-3 ft. per year. It must be planted in full sun, though it’s adaptable to a variety of soils including sands and clays.
Deodar’s branches have a bottle-brush appearance, with very long (1-2 in.) needles, which are blue/gray-green, and soft to the touch. Deodars are low-maintenance and drought tolerant once established.
