Penstemon fruticosus (Shrubby Penstemon)

$0.00

This native subshrub Penstemon from our alpine region transfers nicely to the lowlands to create focal points in low-height mixed borders or as an edge-plant along walkways or to define the front of a sunny bed.

The 2-inch long, deeply tubular, bright lavender flowers are held straight out for hummingbirds and other pollinators to enjoy from May through July. Shear back for extended blooms.

The name "fruticosus" literally means "shrubby," referring to this plant"s woody structure and its lovely evergreen leaves.

It"s a very long-lived plant; I planted a patch 23 years ago and it"s still going strong, despite many changes in the landscape around it! It hasn"t been watered since its first summer and it continues to produce beautiful blooms.

It needs sun and sharp drainage to perform its best. It will survive in part shade, but not offer much in the way of blooms. Each plant grows ~10-18 in. high by ~30 in. wide.
