Arbutus unedo 'Compacta' (Dwarf Strawberry tree) (5 gal)

$44.00

The shrub or compact form of Strawberry Tree is a relative of our native Pacific Madrone, but much smaller and easier to grow!

Offering four seasons of beauty in every regard: glossy evergreen foliage, clusters of bell-shaped flowers that turn to large, bright orange-red fruits, and striking mahogany bark! Flowers bloom from October to December, providing late-season forage for pollinators, and fruits persist for many months, offering forage for birds.

With its robust form and evergreen leaves, dwarf strawberry tree is a wonderful backbone plant for a drought-tolerant, mixed species hedgerow or privacy screen. It also is a terrific signature plant in a smaller space.

Over time you can prune these shrubs to accentuate the sculptural qualities of the branching and bark and add understory plants below.

They typically grow about 6 ft. x 6 ft., reaching up to 10 ft. over time. Best in full sun and well-drained soils, it will become drought tolerant within one or two summers of intermittent deep but infrequent watering. It’s such a terrific plant that it has been named a PNW “Great Plant Pick”!
