Sitka spruce is a large coniferous, evergreen tree growing to almost 230 ft. tall, with a trunk diameter at breast height that can exceed 16 ft. Sitka spruce is found primarily in moist, well-drained sites along the Pacific Coast between the ocean and the coastal mountains.

Its bark is a thin reddish brown to gray, breaking up into small scales. The needles are yellowish to bluish-green, stiff and very sharp to the touch. Pollen cones are red, seed cones are reddish brown.

Sitka spruce provides habitat for a large variety of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The seeds and needles provide food.
