Winter Twig Identification Field Course

from $5.00

Our popular “Winter Twig Identification Field Course” is a 2.5-hour “walking workshop” held at McLane Creek Nature Trail on January 26th, with two options for time. Choose either the sessionfrom 10am to about 12:30pm OR the afternoon session from 1pm-about 3:30pm. See more information on the calendar event here.

By purchasing a “Pay it Forward” registration, you support an additional slot to be offered as a scholarship. If you’d like to apply for a scholarship, please send us your information here. We also offer a $5 Student/AmeriCorps price!

We also have books available for purchase, which you can pick up at the event. Our paperback guide, Winter in the Woods: A Winter Guide to Deciduous Native Plants in Western Washington includes a glossary of basic scientific terms to help you with identification, beautiful line drawings to illustrate each plant, simple descriptions of each plant and its habitat, specific information on twig color and texture and other distinguishing features, such as leaf scars and fruits and seeds.

What to know in advance:

This is an easy hike along well maintained trails and boardwalks with little to no elevation gain. The most critical part of planning for a fun outing is dressing in many warm layers and warm footwear so that you can withstand the January cold as we embark on the “botany crawl” in cold weather! If you’re used to winter hiking, you will be shocked by how quickly your body gets cold when you’re not moving briskly!
Other important things to know: the location requires a Discover Pass, though we can offer you a temporary pass in exchange for future volunteer work at the Trail; you will need to bring reading glasses if you use them; we ask that you come early for check in, as parking may be crowded.
The notes above are basics! We will send out detailed information to all registered participants in advance of the class; please contact us if you do not receive that email.
